IMPROVED COOKSTOVE PROJECT IN BANGLADESH

Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) began research to develop a modern cooking stove in 1980. After research, they create different models of the cooking stoves for saving fuel, keeping kitchen smoke pollution-free and protecting users from smoke-related diseases. But unfortunately, this initiative failed and stopped in 1990. In December 2005 GIZ (German Development Co-operation) started the promotion of Improved Cook Stoves (ICS) using the clay stove model developed by IFRD (Institute of Fuel Research and Development) of BCSIR. But monitoring showed that the quality of stoves was not always according to design standards. To overcome the quality problem GIZ introduced concrete as the material of manufacturing ICS in 2010. GIZ tested the efficiency of Bondhu Chula by ‘Institute of Energy’ of ‘University of Dhaka’. According to their analysis, the efficiency of the Domestic Cooking Stove was 21.2%, 24.2% and 24.4% of 8 inches, 9 inches and 10-inch model Bondhu Chula.
